Reducing Food Loss and Waste: Dual Impact Actions to Address Climate Change and Improve Nutrition
This report synthesizes the findings of a workshop convened to examine food loss and waste
(FLW) as a combined climate, nutrition, and economic challenge. Drawing on expertise from
seven world regions, including East and South Asia, Eastern, Southern, and Western Africa, the
European Union, the Middle East and North Africa, and North and South America, with country
case studies spanning Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Mozambique,
Nepal, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States , it
sets out to generate actionable policy, programmatic, and financing recommendations. Its central
aim is to identify interventions that reduce FLW while delivering dual benefits for climate
change mitigation and improved nutrition, and to ensure that a global problem is met with locally
grounded solutions. The report is intended for policymakers, donors, researchers, public and
private-sector actors working toward Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which calls for
halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses
along production and supply chains by 2030.
