Dr Garry Hayman is a land surface and Earth system modeller at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). His research interests cover land-atmosphere interactions (particularly biogeochemical), land surface and Earth system modelling, and the use of measurements, including Earth Observation and remote sensing data, for model evaluation.

Garry is the UKCEH lead investigator for UK projects on Earth System modelling (TerraFIRMA) and on modelling peatlands. He has previously been involved in projects concerning wetlands, their emissions of methane and the impact of these emissions on anthropogenic carbon budgets (to meet global warming targets). He is the head of the International Project Office, hosted by UKCEH, for the Integrated Land-Ecosystem Atmosphere Process Study (iLEAPS), a Future Earth global research network.

Prior to joining UKCEH, Garry worked for 25 years on key atmospheric chemistry and air pollution issues, including polar ozone depletion (‘Ozone Holes’), acid deposition, photochemical oxidant formation in the lower troposphere, and on particulate matter. The research was initially laboratory-based but later became focused on measurements and modelling.
