Elchin Jafarov is a Senior Research Scientist at Woodwell Climate Research Center, where he leads the Arctic Modeling Team. His research focuses on permafrost dynamics, Arctic carbon cycling, ecosystem modeling, and climate feedbacks in northern high-latitude systems. He develops and applies process-based models to understand how warming, wildfire, hydrology, and landscape change affect permafrost stability and carbon emissions. Jafarov’s work supports regional and circumpolar assessments of permafrost change and contributes to collaborative research efforts linking field observations, remote sensing, and Earth system modeling.
