Senior Research Scholar
Thomas Gasser is a Senior Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), where he leads the Earth System Modeling research theme. His work focuses on reduced-complexity Earth system models that link biogeochemical cycles, climate, and human-driven land and energy systems, with a particular emphasis on producing policy-relevant projections at the interface between Earth system science and integrated assessment. His research encompasses carbon budgets, land-use change accounting, and the climate implications of energy transition strategies, including physical constraints on land-based mitigation options, and whole-system feedbacks that shape how much warming different decarbonisation pathways ultimately deliver. He contributes regularly to the Global Carbon Budget and to IPCC-class scenario assessment processes.
