Brian Buma is a Senior Climate Scientist and coordinates the Climate Innovation Initiative at the Environmental Defense Fund. He also coordinates the work around wetland and fire feedback mitigation opportunities and policy efforts to include warming-induced emissions in national quantification. Buma works on unearthing and testing innovation approaches to global scale climate change mitigation and carbon dioxide removal, and has instigated programs and research into new satellites, carbon dioxide removal pathways, innovative transmission design, wildfire management, and many other topics. The key criteria for successful innovation is real world impact – bringing down global temperature, and doing so in a transparent, verifiable, and sustainable way. Buma is a former tenured professor at the University of Colorado and the University of Alaska. He has published over 90 papers in the scientific peer reviewed literature, written a popular press book on climate change science, and speaks regularly to public audiences on global change issues. In addition to science, Brian is a decade long National Geographic Explorer and public communicator.
