SOS researchers use a Stössel box to measure sublimation and deposition at the top of a snowpack. The box is placed outside, nested carefully so that it is flush with the snow surface. The Stössel box is weighed at the beginning and the end of the day, at sunrise and sunset, to measure mass loss (sublimation) during the day and mass gain (deposition) during the night.
