Guido Grosse

Prof. Dr. Guido Grosse is jointly appointed by AWI and the University of Potsdam as a Full Professor for Permafrost in the Earth System and is Head of the Permafrost Research Section at AWI, Germany. He graduated as a geologist at the Technical University and Mining Academy Freiberg, Germany, in 2001, and completed a doctorate in Geosciences at the University of Potsdam, Germany, in 2005. He then conducted postdoctoral research on permafrost at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (2006-2009), where he also became research faculty (2009-2013). His research focuses on combining field studies and remote sensing of permafrost landscape dynamics across broad spatial and temporal scales, hydrology, carbon cycling, and the impacts of climate change in Arctic permafrost regions. Since 1999, he participated in >30 winter and summer ground-based expeditions to arctic Alaska, Canada, and Siberia. He also led five airborne campaigns in arctic Alaska and Canada. He received an ERC Starting Grant project (2013-2018) on rapid permafrost thaw and impacts on carbon pools and has led or is still leading/co-leading large permafrost and remote sensing-themed research projects funded through NASA, ESA, NSF, EU, HGF, BMFTR, Google.org, and Schmidt Sciences. He furthermore is a director of both the permafrost data platform Arctic Permafrost Geospatial Centre APGC (https://apgc.awi.de) and the Arctic Landscape Explorer ALEX (https://alex.awi.de), providing interactive remote sensing-based maps with up-to-date information on land surface changes, hotspots of disturbance, and potential areas of active permafrost thaw and erosion. He has >200 peer reviewed scientific publications and is an ISI Highly Cited Researcher.
