Elina Valkonen began her work on Arctic cyclones at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, where she researched extratropical cyclones and their interactions with North Atlantic sea surface. After receiving her Bachelors and Master’s degrees from the University of Helsinki she pursed her PhD at the University of Colorado, where she focused on the climatology of Arctic cyclones and their interactions with sea ice under John Cassano. Elina is currently at Colorado State University as a post-doctoral researcher with Elizabeth Barnes, where she is expanding the knowledge of Arctic cyclones using novel techniques in machine learning.
