Jurgen Scheffran

Jurgen Scheffran is a Senior Research Scientist in the Program in Arms Control, Disarmament and International Security (ACDIS) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has adjunct faculty appointments at the Departments of Atmospheric Sciences and Political Science. He received a physics diploma and PhD at the University of Marburg in Germany. Throughout the 1990s he worked as a researcher in the interdisciplinary research group IANUS and at the mathematics department of the Technical University of Darmstadt. After a research project at Hamburg University, he joined the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in 2001, and in 2003 he was Visiting Professor at the University of Paris (Pantheon/Sorbonne).His research and teaching interests include: Sustainable development, environmental conflicts, energy and climate change; complex systems analysis and computer modeling; technology assessment and international security. On these topics he served as advisor to the Bureau for Technology Assessment, the Federal Environmental Agency and the United Nations. He is leading a multi-disciplinary research project on renewable energy and land-use, for which he has set up a website and organizes an international conference, and actively supports the establishment of a bioenergy research center at the University of Illinois.
