In February 2008 Prof. Dr. Detlef Stammer, Institute for Physical Oceanography at the University of Hamburg, was appointed Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) by the Max Planck Society's (MPG) President Prof. Dr. Peter Gruss. This recognition is based on his outstanding research performances in oceanography. Prof. Stammer is Managing Director of the Institute for Physical Oceanography at the University of Hamburg and also head of the working group Physical Oceanography and Remote Sensing, which offers a broad range of research areas dealing with general oceanic circulation, its space-time variability, its transport properties and its relevance to climate. These problems are approached through the analysis of satellite observations and numerical models. Generally, satellite oceanography and data assimilation can be considered as his key activities. Prof. Stammer acts as a deputy spokesman for the Cluster of Excellence called Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction (CliSAP) that was installed at the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW) within the framework of the German Excellence Initiative in October 2007.
