Thomas C. Peterson is a research meteorologist at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC. He is a lead author on the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, a member of the GCOS Atmospheric Observation Panel for Climate, lead author on CCSP Product 1.1 Temperature Trends in the Lower Atmosphere: Steps for Understanding and Reconciling Differences, and chair of the World Meteorological Organization's Commission for Climatology Open Programme Area Group on Monitoring and Analysis of Climate Variability and Change. During 2004 and 2005 he organized four regional workshops that analyzed changes in extremes in Central America, South America, the Middle East, and south-central Asia. He is an author or co-author of eight peer-reviewed papers on observed changes in extremes. The international coordination of a suite of indices of extremes these papers are built on started in 1998 when Dr. Peterson was serving as the WMO Commission for Climatology's "rapporteur" on statistical methods for climatology with emphasis on analyses of extreme events._
