Nancy Baron is the Ocean Science Outreach Director COMPASS (Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea) and also the lead communications trainer for the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program. In these capacities, she helps environmental scientists translate the relevance of their work to journalists, the public and policy makers. She also leads communications workshops for academic scientists, graduate students and post docs. Baron has an interdisciplinary Masters degree in Global Marine Studies from the University of British Columbia and a B.Sc. in Zoology. Since 1997 she has won two Science in Society science journalism awards from the Canadian Association of Science Writers, a Canadian National Magazine award, and numerous other awards for science writing and communications. She also hosted natural history documentaries for Discovery Channel in British Columbia, Trinidad and Nepal. Her popular field guide, "Birds of the Pacific Northwest Coast" published by Lone Pine Publishing in1997, is a top selling beginners' guide to birding.
