M. Sofiev has worked in the field of atmospheric physics and chemistry, mainly concentrating in development and application of the Lagrangian and Eulerian air pollution models for regional and large-scale (Dispersion Model for Atmospheric Transport DMAT), as well as operational dispersion modelling for accidental releases (SILAM atmospheric dispersion and dose assessment model). The list of pollutants includes: acidifying and toxic compounds, ozone, radioactive and biological species. Specific areas of interest are: model verification and comparison with measurements, statistical methodology for model validation, analysis of the measurement data, inverse and adjoint dispersion modeling, computer experiments, etc
