Geothermal

Geothermal resources provided 0.1% of the worldwide electricity supply in 2015. Geothermal energy takes the form of electricity and direct heating and cooling, totaling an estimated 151 TWh in 2015 [REN21, 2016].

The total geothermal energy used in 2017 was an estimated 170 TWh in 2017, with electricity and thermal output nearly equal shares [REN21, 2018].

The total geothermal power capacity stood at 12.8 GW at the end of 2017, with 0.7 GW of addition in 2017 alone [REN 21, 2018].
