Description

Session Description:

Urbanization is a global megatrend that is influencing almost every ecosystem on Earth. Every day, an area the size of 20,000 American football fields becomes urbanized. Every 10 days, the global urban population increases by about 1.3 million. Urban areas generate more than 70% of global fossil fuel CO2 emissions. If the top 50 emitting cities were a single country, its emissions would rank third globally, behind China and the U.S. What does rapid and large-scale urbanization mean for the planet? This talk will draw on more than 10 years of research in China and India to examine the implications of urbanization on local and global environments.
